Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the formation of a steering committee to ensure the nationwide adoption and effective implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) across key sectors, reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing Pakistan’s digital economy.
Chairing a high-level meeting on AI promotion on Saturday, the prime minister said that the use of AI will play a pivotal role in national economic development, adding that the integration of artificial intelligence would make the implementation of a digital economy more efficient and productive.
Sharif underscored the importance of data protection, data sovereignty, and responsible use of AI, stressing that these principles must guide every step of the country’s technological advancement.
The meeting also reviewed the government’s progress in promoting AI, during which officials informed the premier that an expert-based AI advisory panel is being established to guide the implementation process and provide strategic oversight.
The prime minister reiterated that the national policy on artificial intelligence will be implemented in letter and spirit, ensuring that AI-driven solutions are adopted responsibly across public and private institutions.
He noted that the government is giving top priority to the promotion of information technology (IT) and AI, as both are central to building a competitive, innovation-led digital economy.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Bilal Bin Saqib, and several senior government officials and AI experts.
