AWS outage disrupts global websites and apps including Fortnite, Snapchat, and Lyft

Cloud service disruption in US-East-1 region affects major gaming, finance, and messaging platforms

SAN FRANCISCO— Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major outage on Monday, disrupting connectivity for multiple companies and causing service interruptions across several major websites and applications, including Fortnite, Snapchat, and Lyft.

AWS confirmed “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region” in an update on its status page.

AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood attributed the disruptions to AWS. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said on X that the outage stemmed from an AWS issue.

Amazon’s own services, including its shopping platform, Prime Video, and Alexa, were also affected, according to Down Detector.

Several gaming platforms, such as Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans, experienced downtime, while payment services Venmo and Chime also reported interruptions.

Uber rival Lyft’s app went offline for thousands of users in the United States, and Signal’s President Meredith Whittaker confirmed that the messaging app was also impacted by the AWS disruption.

AWS, which provides computing power and cloud storage for clients worldwide, has not issued a further statement.
