The Prime Minister’s Office has authorised the Commerce Ministry to move forward with the resumption of export and import of jewellery, including gold, with a summary now awaiting final approval from the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, Business Recorder reported, citing official sources.
The Commerce Ministry has also proposed condoning the three-month suspension period under SRO 760 to protect gold traders’ commercial commitments made during the pause. To avoid future regulatory issues, the ministry has suggested linking gold trade to a robust verification system.
The reinstatement of SRO 760, which governs the regulatory framework for the gems and jewellery trade, was assured by Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, to the All Pakistan Small Gems Jewellers & Tools Association (APSGJTA) on August 8, 2025. This followed a review of the SRO after its expiration on July 8, 2025, when the federal cabinet suspended it for a reassessment.
A committee was formed to examine the SRO and propose improvements, with consultations held with private-sector stakeholders in August. Following these discussions, jewellery exporters supported the committee’s recommendations, which were then formally submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The matter was also raised in the National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce, where Chairman Jawed Hanif Khan called for swift resolution.
Now that the Prime Minister’s Office has given the go-ahead, the ECC’s final approval is anticipated to pave the way for the full resumption of the legal gold and jewellery trade.
