Senate approves 120-day extension of Virtual Assets Ordinance, 2025

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar moves resolution under Article 89(2)(a)(ii) to extend ordinance validity beyond November 5

The Senate on Tuesday approved a resolution extending the Virtual Assets Ordinance, 2025 (Ordinance No. VII of 2025) for an additional 120 days, ensuring its continued enforcement beyond November 5, 2025.

The resolution was moved by Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, who cited Article 89(2)(a)(ii) of the Constitution of Pakistan as the legal basis for the extension.

The move aims to maintain regulatory continuity in the country’s evolving digital finance and virtual assets framework until the legislation can be formally enacted through Parliament.

Officials said the extension will provide additional time for review, consultation, and alignment of the ordinance with emerging international standards on digital assets and anti-money laundering compliance.

The Virtual Assets Ordinance, 2025, introduced earlier this year, lays out the legal framework for licensing, supervision, and taxation of digital and crypto-related financial instruments, marking a significant step toward Pakistan’s digital economy modernization.
