Pakistan sets $200 million target for meat exports to Malaysia

Govt reviews challenges, proposes new business model and incentives to scale halal meat shipments

A meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Meat Exports on Thursday proposed setting a $200 million target for Pakistan’s meat exports to Malaysia, as the government works to expand its presence in international halal markets.

The meeting, held in Islamabad, was co-chaired by the special assistant to the prime minister on industries and production and the federal commerce minister, according to an official news release. Public- and private-sector stakeholders participated to review existing challenges, recommendations and the future roadmap for increasing exports.

Participants were informed that a collaborative business model is being designed with private exporters to streamline and boost shipments to Malaysia. Officials said the plan aims to improve coordination with exporters and remove bottlenecks in processing and supply systems.

It was highlighted that Pakistan must upgrade its grazing areas, establish laboratories for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccines and introduce targeted incentives to make its meat industry competitive. These steps were described as essential to ensuring compliance with Malaysian requirements and securing long-term access to the market.

The government is preparing a comprehensive export strategy under the prime minister’s directives. Pakistan is already fully compliant for exporting boneless meat, and work is under way to develop a viable framework for exports of bone-in meat.

Officials noted that the draft export plan has been developed after extensive consultations with stakeholders. The strategy includes proposed incentives to support buffalo meat exports and measures to strengthen processing systems, cold-chain infrastructure and export-ready mechanisms.

The commerce minister said the newly developed business model will soon be submitted to the prime minister for approval. He added that the initiative is expected to boost Pakistan’s overall export portfolio and create new opportunities in high-demand halal markets, particularly in Malaysia.
