The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) carried out a major early morning inspection at Tollinton Market on Saturday, checking a total of 63,000 kg of meat and confiscating 6,750 kg of poultry and meat found to be sick or diseased.
Veterinary specialists examining the seized birds reported cases of flu, underweight conditions, and various other illnesses. The PFA food safety team inspected 50 meat shops and suppliers, imposing heavy fines for multiple violations.
Director General PFA Asim Javaid highlighted that modern standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been established in line with international standards to maintain meat quality. He stressed that workers must wear aprons, head covers, masks, and gloves while handling meat, and confirmed that Tollinton Market is inspected in three shifts daily. “There will be no compromise on meat quality, and violators will face strict action,” he said.
DG PFA directed suppliers to provide only healthy poultry as per the SOPs and reiterated that operations targeting health-adulterating elements continue round the clock under orders of the Chief Minister Punjab.
The public has been urged to assist the authority in combating the adulteration mafia by reporting complaints through PFA’s helpline at 1223.
