Pakistan’s wetlands act as economic shield for ports, fisheries, Minister says

Pakistan’s wetlands provide critical protection for ports, coastal infrastructure, and fisheries while forming the backbone of the country’s blue economy, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said on Sunday.

Marking World Wetlands Day 2026, the minister said ecosystems such as mangroves, estuaries, tidal flats, and coastal lagoons act as natural buffers against flooding, coastal erosion, and sea level rise, reducing climate related risks to maritime trade and coastal communities.

Pakistan has more than 240 significant wetlands, though some studies put the number at 225. These ecosystems cover an estimated 10 per cent of the country’s total land area, making them a major natural asset with direct economic value.

Junaid Chaudhry said wetlands help maintain water quality and ecological balance in the Arabian Sea while protecting ports and other coastal infrastructure from environmental stress.

He highlighted the Indus Delta mangroves as key breeding and nursery grounds for fish and marine species, noting that healthy wetlands are essential for sustaining fisheries, food security, and livelihoods dependent on fishing.

The minister said wetlands support core components of the blue economy, including fisheries, maritime trade, eco tourism, and climate resilience, while lowering disaster risks and enhancing natural productivity.

Referring to the 2026 theme, “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” he said coastal communities in Sindh and Balochistan have long practiced sustainable fishing and mangrove protection, contributing to ecosystem resilience.

The minister called for stronger conservation measures, greater public awareness, and increased community participation to protect wetlands for future generations and ensure long term economic and environmental stability.
