Punjab plans interest-free loans to modernize poultry sector

The Punjab government is considering interest-free loans for commercial poultry entrepreneurs, particularly for value-added ventures such as processing plants and cold storage facilities, and is exploring ways to facilitate the import of advanced poultry machinery.

“Various proposals are under discussion with industry stakeholders to formulate a policy,” said Dr Sajjad Hussain Kashfi, Director General (Research), Punjab Livestock Department.

Punjab accounts for more than 70% of Pakistan’s poultry farms, 80% of egg production, 85% of feed output, and all poultry processing units. Poultry meat is critical in stabilizing prices of mutton, beef, and pulses, making the sector central to the country’s food security.

The Poultry Research Institute (PRI) Rawalpindi supports farms through its provincial network, providing diagnostic services, training on flock management, and guidance on disease prevention and treatment.

Highlighting the sector’s economic footprint, Dr Abdul Karim Bhatti, former central chairman of the Pakistan Poultry Association, said Punjab alone has attracted more than Rs700 billion in investment, generating roughly 1.5 million jobs, mainly in rural areas. The province hosts an estimated 4,866 layer farms, 17,405 broiler farms, and numerous high-density controlled sheds, supplying affordable white meat and eggs for Pakistan’s 250 million people.

Dr Bhatti stressed that promoting documented and hygienic meat processing, along with processed and branded products, would strengthen food safety and consumer health. He also called for a predictable, market-oriented pricing mechanism to help producers manage price fluctuations and enhance investor confidence.

“Poultry is a dynamic, demand-driven industry,” he said. “With consistent policy support and a level playing field, Punjab’s poultry sector can expand operations, sustain rural livelihoods, and meet the country’s growing protein needs.”
