Pakistan's policy efforts helped economic stabilisation, confidence rebuilding: IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lauded Pakistan’s policy efforts under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), which have helped the nation to stabilise its economy and rebuild confidence.

IMF Director of Communications, Julie Kozack, shared key updates on Pakistan's economic performance during a routine press briefing, particularly in relation to the ongoing reforms under the IMF’s programs.

Kozack highlighted Pakistan’s strong fiscal performance, saying that the country had achieved a primary fiscal surplus of 1.3% of GDP in fiscal year 2025. This is in line with the targets set under the IMF’s program, demonstrating significant progress in fiscal consolidation. Additionally, headline inflation in Pakistan has remained relatively contained, and the country achieved a major milestone with its first current account surplus in 14 years, further contributing to the stabilisation of its economy.

Kozack also pointed out that Pakistan's policy efforts under the EFF have helped stabilize the economy and rebuild confidence.

Regarding governance and anti-corruption efforts, Kozack referenced the recent publication of the Governance and Corruption Diagnostic Report, which includes proposals for crucial reforms. These include simplifying tax policy design, levelling the playing field in public procurement, and improving asset declaration transparency. These reforms are aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s institutional framework and supporting sustainable economic growth.

The IMF is also preparing for its Third Review under the EFF and the Second Review under the RSF, with a staff mission scheduled to visit Pakistan starting February 25, 2026. The reviews will assess Pakistan's progress in meeting its program targets and continuing its economic recovery efforts.
