Punjab approves Rs3 billion plan to deploy 30 electric fog cannons to curb smog

The Punjab government has approved a Rs3 billion project to deploy 30 modern fog cannons mounted on electric trucks to control smog and reduce dust in major urban and industrial areas.

As per reports, the initiative forms part of the province’s broader clean air and climate strategy aimed at addressing air pollution and strengthening environmental governance. The fog cannons will be deployed in pollution-affected cities to help reduce airborne particulate matter.

Under the Lahore Air Improvement Framework, Rs2.25 billion has been allocated to implement an integrated clean air programme. As part of this framework, a Super Station System will enable real-time identification of pollution sources in Lahore for the first time.

The government also plans to introduce a “One City, One Policy” model to streamline air quality management. More than 50 air quality monitoring units have already been installed across Punjab, supported by an automated quality assurance system to ensure data transparency and accuracy.

In addition, a digital environmental monitoring system is being activated to improve oversight of industrial emissions. Authorities have also approved the upgradation of environmental laboratories and installation of advanced equipment to strengthen enforcement and monitoring capacity.
