PTA issues 5G licences to three operators, rollout begins in phases

Pakistan has formally begun the rollout of 5G services after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued licences to three telecom operators. Licences were awarded to Zong, Jazz and Ufone at a ceremony held at the Prime Minister’s House on Thursday, enabling the companies to start providing high-speed internet services.

Zong and Jazz have already launched 5G services, while Ufone is expected to begin rollout in the coming days.

The PTA said services will be introduced in phases, with telecom companies coordinating with mobile manufacturers to enable 5G functionality on compatible devices.

Officials said users will receive software updates to access the new services.

The government said the launch marks the introduction of advanced digital infrastructure aimed at supporting sectors such as industry, agriculture and information technology.

Authorities also noted that efforts are underway to improve existing 4G services alongside the 5G rollout.

The PTA said Pakistan has conducted multiple spectrum auctions over the years, with 480 MHz of spectrum allocated, supporting the transition to next-generation connectivity.

Officials said the rollout will continue in stages as operators expand coverage and network capacity across the country.
