The Senate has transferred Rs265 million back to the Finance Division after reviewing its expenditures, marking an early step in implementing cost-cutting measures under the government’s broader austerity campaign.
According to an official statement issued on Friday, the decision was made on the instructions of Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, who directed the Senate Secretariat to strictly enforce fiscal discipline in line with the austerity drive announced by the prime minister.
Officials said the funds were surrendered following a comprehensive internal assessment of spending, with the Secretariat identifying immediate savings that could be redirected to the national exchequer. Authorities estimate that the ongoing austerity measures could generate total savings ranging between Rs700 million and Rs750 million during the current fiscal year.
The renewed focus on expenditure control comes amid heightened public scrutiny over reports that the Senate Secretariat had procured a luxury Toyota Land Cruiser valued at approximately Rs90 million for the chairman. The purchase drew significant criticism, prompting the Secretariat to clarify that the vehicle had been acquired from budget savings in the previous financial year 2024-25 and delivered earlier this month.
In response to the controversy and the prevailing economic challenges, Gilani convened a high-level meeting at the Senate Secretariat last week to accelerate implementation of austerity measures. During the session, he emphasized that financial restraint should begin at the top tiers of government and cascade throughout public institutions.
The chairman also instructed relevant departments within the Secretariat to rationalize non-essential spending, reduce operational costs, and improve resource utilization while ensuring that legislative work, parliamentary oversight, and institutional responsibilities continue without disruption.
The Senate Secretariat stated that additional cost-saving opportunities are being explored, with further reductions in expenditure expected in the coming weeks as part of ongoing efforts to support national economic stability.
