Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has indicated a possible increase in electricity tariffs following a sharp rise in petroleum prices, as the government explores energy conservation measures to manage supply pressures.
In a statement on the social media platform X, the minister said the current energy situation extends beyond oil and is also affecting gas and furnace oil supplies, which could influence electricity generation costs. He added that consultations are underway with provincial governments to revise market timings and introduce other steps to reduce overall energy consumption.
The development comes after the government increased petrol prices by Rs137 per litre to Rs458.40 and diesel by Rs184.49 per litre to Rs520.35, citing rising global oil prices linked to Middle East tensions.
Officials said the government is attempting to limit the impact on consumers while managing rising input costs. The minister urged energy conservation, stating that reduced consumption could ease pressure on the system.
Separately, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah warned that economic pressures could intensify if the regional conflict continues.
The fuel price hike has drawn criticism from opposition parties, which have announced protests against the increase, while the government maintains that the adjustment reflects global market trends.
