Punjab rolls out Rs23 billion wheat support package

The Punjab government has announced a Rs23 billion support package for wheat farmers along with a detailed Wheat Harvesting Plan 2026 aimed at improving yields and reducing post-harvest losses.

The plan, prepared by the Directorate of Agriculture Information, focuses on managing the critical ripening and harvesting phase of the crop.

Officials said that around 10% of wheat production is lost after harvesting due to mismanagement and environmental factors. The plan outlines measures to minimise losses through improved timing, weather monitoring and better handling practices.

Farmers have been advised to monitor weather conditions, including rainfall, wind and temperature fluctuations, and schedule harvesting when grain moisture content is between 10% and 12%. Early harvesting can affect grain quality, while delays may result in losses in the field.

The plan also recommends arranging labour, machinery and storage in advance, including combine harvesters, threshers and storage materials. Harvesting operations should be paused during rainfall to prevent damage.

Guidelines have been issued for proper threshing, handling and storage of wheat. Authorities have advised the use of clean and pest-free storage facilities, with warehouses to be treated and sealed to protect grain quality.

Under the support package, the government will provide Rs23 billion through the Chief Minister’s Cheap Diesel Programme. The subsidy will be available to farmers owning up to 25 acres of land.

The initiative is expected to benefit around 4 million farmers across the province. Registration can be completed through a dedicated helpline or online portal, while funds will be transferred directly to more than 800,000 Kisan Card holders.
