Pakistan launches Iran transit corridor, first shipment reaches Central Asia via Tashkent route

Pakistan on Sunday operationalised its transit corridor with Iran, dispatching its first export consignment from Karachi to Tashkent to establish a new overland trade route linking Central Asia.

According to media reports, the inaugural shipment, comprising frozen meat, departed from Karachi under the newly introduced corridor, offering exporters an alternative to existing routes for accessing Central Asian markets.

An opening ceremony was held in Karachi, attended by customs authorities and logistics representatives, where the launch was presented as a step towards improving trade connectivity between Pakistan, Iran and Central Asia.

Under the arrangement, cargo will move through Iran using the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system, aimed at facilitating cross-border transport and minimising delays associated with conventional transit procedures.

Officials said the corridor is expected to provide exporters with a faster and more cost-efficient option for delivering goods, particularly to landlocked Central Asian economies.

The new route is also projected to reduce transit time and support trade volumes by improving logistical access to regional markets.

Authorities stated that the corridor could expand export opportunities and contribute to economic engagement with neighbouring regions.

The dispatch of the first consignment marks the start of operations under the corridor and reflects efforts to diversify Pakistan’s trade routes and regional connectivity.
