Punjab plans cut in traffic fines to ease burden on citizens

The Punjab government is moving to reduce traffic fines across multiple vehicle categories in a move aimed at easing the financial burden on citizens, with a summary approved by the chief minister and set to be presented in the Punjab Assembly.

According to a news report, the proposal, prepared by the Punjab Traffic Police, outlines revised penalties that will take effect once cleared by the provincial legislature.

Under the plan, fines for motorcycle violations are proposed to be reduced from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000, with a ceiling of Rs2,000 for serious offences.

For rickshaws, penalties are expected to be cut from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000, while major violations may carry fines of up to Rs2,000.

Fines for cars and jeeps are proposed to be reduced from Rs5,000 to Rs3,000, although penalties for serious violations will remain at Rs5,000.

Officials said overspeeding fines for motorcycles, rickshaws and cars will remain unchanged under the revised structure.

For vehicles with engine capacities above 2,000cc, fines are proposed to be reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000, with a minimum penalty of Rs2,000.

In the case of light transport vehicles, including vans and coasters, fines are expected to be lowered from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000.

For heavy transport vehicles such as trucks and buses, penalties are proposed to be reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000.

The summary also includes reductions in fines for several other violations across both light and heavy vehicle categories.

Officials said the revisions aim to align penalties with current economic conditions while maintaining enforcement of traffic laws and road safety, adding that final approval rests with the Punjab Assembly.
