Govt collects over Rs180 billion petroleum levy in six weeks amid regional tensions

The federal government has collected more than Rs180 billion from consumers through the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) over the past six weeks, according to officials from the Ministry of Finance.

The increase in collections coincided with heightened regional tensions, which contributed to higher levy inflows on petroleum products.

Data shows that total PDL collection reached Rs1,234 billion from July to mid-April of the current fiscal year, marking an increase of around Rs400 billion compared to the same period last year.

Monthly figures indicate that Rs157 billion was collected in July, followed by Rs103.46 billion in August and Rs112.85 billion in September 2025. Collections rose to Rs143.48 billion in October and Rs148.36 billion in November, before reaching a peak of Rs162.46 billion in December.

In the following months, Rs108.76 billion was collected in January, Rs120.39 billion in February, and Rs139.48 billion in March.

During the first half of April alone, Rs38 billion has already been collected under the levy.

Officials said a significant portion of revenue came from imported petroleum products, with over Rs598 billion collected on imported petrol and diesel between July and mid-April.

An additional Rs635.19 billion was generated from petroleum products derived from crude oil during July–March.
