Microsoft adds Palestinian geographic terminology to maps, removes Israeli labels

Microsoft has updated its digital mapping services to reflect Palestinian geographical terminology, replacing certain Israeli designations used for the occupied West Bank, according to the Arab Centre for the Advancement of Social Media.

In a statement, the group said that location-based services, including Microsoft’s Bing, have removed references to “Judea and Samaria, Israel” and now label the area as the “West Bank.”

The term “Judea and Samaria” is used by Israel to describe the territory, which under international law is recognised as occupied Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem.

7amleh said the change represents a correction in how the region is identified on digital platforms. Advocacy manager Lama Nazeeh called on technology companies to align mapping practices with international legal standards.

An independent check of Bing Maps confirmed that the updated label “West Bank” is now in use. Microsoft has not issued an official statement on the changes.

The update comes amid wider scrutiny of how global technology companies represent disputed territories and conflicts in digital services.

The West Bank has seen ongoing tensions, including military operations, arrests and settlement activity. Palestinian authorities have raised concerns over the potential impact of these developments on the status of the territory.

In July 2024, the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion stating that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful and called for the removal of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
