Pakistan drug testing lab gets WHO prequalification

The first drug testing laboratory under the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan has secured prequalification from the World Health Organization, marking a key step in strengthening Pakistan’s pharmaceutical regulatory framework, officials said on Thursday.

The laboratory, to be established in Karachi under DRAP administration, received the accreditation through a process supported and coordinated by the Special Investment Facilitation Council, which also engaged with international stakeholders during implementation.

According to the statement, the certification process involved resolving multiple domestic and international challenges, with SIFC playing a facilitative role in ensuring compliance and coordination.

The WHO prequalification is expected to enhance global recognition of Pakistan’s drug quality and regulatory standards, improving confidence in the country’s pharmaceutical sector.

Officials said the development is also likely to support growth in pharmaceutical exports and strengthen investor interest in local manufacturing.

It is further expected to reduce reliance on foreign laboratories by expanding domestic testing capacity.

Authorities described the development as part of broader regulatory modernisation efforts aimed at institutional strengthening and improved oversight in the pharmaceutical sector.
