Visa has reported an 80 per cent year-on-year increase in spending on premium consumer cards in Pakistan during the Ramazan and Eidul Fitr period, driven by higher expenditure on travel, retail and food.
According to Visa’s latest Retail Spend Monitor, overall spending patterns shifted during Ramazan and peaked around Eid, with total spending rising 10 per cent during the holiday period.
International travel activity also recorded growth, with inbound spending by foreign visitors increasing 30 per cent, while outbound spending by Pakistani consumers rose around 35 per cent, reflecting a preference for longer trips. Spending to destinations such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the UK increased by 55 per cent.
Domestically, grocery spending rose 25 per cent in the week leading up to Ramazan, while in-store retail and dining remained key contributors to overall consumption during the month.
Transaction patterns also shifted towards later hours, with post-Iftar spending increasing by 30 per cent and pre-Sehri transactions rising 85 per cent.
During the Eid period, retail spending increased 40 per cent, while food-related expenditure rose 15 per cent compared to preceding days.
Country Manager for Visa in Pakistan and Afghanistan Umar S Khan said the seasonal increase reflects changing consumer behaviour and presents opportunities for businesses to align their offerings with peak demand periods.
