Pakistan delays mango export start to June 1 due to climatic impact on crop maturity

The Ministry of Commerce has extended the start of Pakistan’s mango export season to June 1 for 2026, following requests from stakeholders citing concerns over fruit maturity and quality.

The ministry directed the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) to coordinate with exporters to comply with regulatory and phytosanitary requirements, especially for shipments to European markets.

An official order stated that the revised date applies under the Export Policy Order 2022, with all other conditions remaining unchanged. Last year, exports began on May 25, while an earlier plan for the current season had proposed May 10 as the start date.

Officials said the decision was taken in response to climatic changes, including an extended winter, which affected the ripening cycle of Sindhri mangoes, particularly in Sindh. The adjustment aims to ensure that exported fruit meets required maturity and quality standards.

Officials said early export of immature fruit could affect Pakistan’s market position, as it may reduce product quality and impact demand in key destinations.

Exporters have also been advised to ensure use of reefer containers and maintain cold chain systems for both sea and air shipments to preserve fruit quality during transit.

The ministry emphasised that adherence to quality standards and value addition measures will be necessary to maintain competitiveness in international markets.
