Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday ordered authorities to draw up a comprehensive plan to stabilise electricity tariffs, placing consumer relief at the centre of ongoing energy sector reforms.
The directive came during a high-level review meeting where officials presented proposals on electricity consumption patterns for both domestic and industrial users. The prime minister instructed relevant departments to finalise concrete measures aimed at reducing the burden on consumers while ensuring system sustainability.
He also called for urgent upgrades to the power transmission network to reduce line losses, identifying inefficiencies in the grid as a key contributor to high electricity costs. Emphasising structural reform, the premier directed wider adoption of modern technology and accelerated promotion of renewable energy projects to address persistent supply gaps.
Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that uninterrupted electricity supply is critical for industrial activity and economic stability, while maintaining that protecting domestic consumers remains a top government priority. He further ordered expansion of digital payment systems to improve billing convenience and transparency.
The prime minister directed that strict enforcement against electricity theft should continue without interruption, terming it essential for long-term sector viability. He added that reforms would be pursued in a way that balances the interests of both industry and the general public.
The meeting was attended by senior cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani and Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, along with senior officials.
