Karachi port clears 16,430kg waste in weekly operation

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has removed 16,430 kilograms of solid waste from high-risk harbour areas during its latest weekly clean-up operation, the maritime affairs ministry said on Monday.

The operation, carried out by KPT’s Marine Pollution Control Department, targeted pollution-prone zones including East Wharf, West Wharf, Boat Basin Jetty, and designated dumping and transfer sites, where heavy vessel traffic, cargo handling, and urban runoff intensify contamination.

According to the statement, the recovered waste included plastic debris, floating garbage, organic refuse, and discarded fishing materials, posing risks to marine ecosystems, port operations, and coastal biodiversity.

A total of 54 boats and 164 personnel were deployed in shifts to ensure comprehensive coverage of the affected areas.

“All collected waste was transported to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board’s Garbage Transfer Station for disposal in accordance with environmental regulations,” Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said, noting that safety protocols were followed to prevent secondary pollution.

He said sustained clean-up efforts contribute to improved vessel turnaround times, reduced operational hazards, and greater trade efficiency.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable maritime environment, stressing that pollution-free ports are essential for safe navigation and economic growth.

He also commended Admiral Shahid Ahmed’s leadership and said further steps are planned, including the introduction of modern waste collection equipment and enhanced monitoring systems.

“We remain committed to safeguarding marine life, ensuring navigational safety, and maintaining a cleaner harbour through stakeholder cooperation and public awareness,” he added.
