Govt introduces QR code verification for subsidised electricity consumers

ISLAMABAD: The government has introduced a new verification mechanism for electricity consumers under which subsidised power users will be required to register through a QR code printed on their monthly bills to continue receiving government-backed relief, in a major step aimed at improving transparency and preventing misuse of subsidies.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the Power Division said electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) have started mentioning the exact amount of subsidy being provided to eligible consumers on their monthly electricity bills.

“Consumers receiving government subsidy will now be able to clearly see the amount of relief being provided to them every month,” the spokesperson said.

According to the Power Division, a QR code is also being printed on electricity bills, which consumers will need to scan to register through an online link.

The spokesperson said the purpose of the registration process was to ensure that subsidies continue reaching deserving and low-income households in a transparent and targeted manner.

“This registration is only being introduced to ensure that poor and low-electricity-consuming families continue receiving relief,” the spokesperson stated.

Clarifying concerns regarding the discontinuation of subsidies, the Power Division said the initiative should not be misunderstood as a withdrawal of relief for protected consumers.

“This does not mean the subsidy is being abolished in any way,” the spokesperson said, adding that the government remained fully committed to supporting poor and middle-class consumers despite economic and fiscal pressures.

“The government’s top priority is to provide relief to poor and middle-income households. The purpose of this process is to ensure fair and proper utilisation of public resources so that taxpayers’ money is not wasted,” the statement added.

The Power Division urged consumers to complete the QR code registration process at the earliest to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of subsidy benefits in the future.

Consumers facing billing discrepancies or technical issues have also been advised to contact the helplines of their respective electricity distribution companies.
