Pakistan’s power generation declined 10% year-on-year in April 2026, while cumulative electricity generation during the first 10 months of FY26 increased 2% to 102,628 GWh, according to JS Global Research.
Total power generation stood at 9,498 GWh in April 2026, compared with the corresponding period last year. On a monthly basis, generation increased 6% from 8,939 GWh recorded in March 2026.
During July-April FY26, total electricity generation reached 102,628 GWh, compared with 100,660 GWh in the same period last year.
The average cost of generation rose 11% year-on-year to ₨10 per unit in April, mainly because of a sharp reduction in RLNG-based electricity generation.
RLNG-based generation fell 82% year-on-year and 25% month-on-month to 380 GWh in April, accounting for only 4% of the total energy mix.
Coal remained the largest source of electricity generation with a 30% share in the energy mix, producing 2,825 GWh during the month, up 10% year-on-year and 3% higher than March.
Hydel generation stood at 2,079 GWh, down 10% year-on-year and 1% lower on a monthly basis, contributing 22% to the overall generation mix.
Nuclear power generation increased 11% year-on-year to 2,097 GWh and also accounted for 22% of the energy mix.
Gas-fired generation rose 15% year-on-year to 968 GWh, though it declined 5% from the previous month. Gas contributed 10% to total generation during April.
Furnace oil-based generation increased to 486 GWh in April from 91 GWh in March, accounting for 5% of the energy mix. The source-wise cost of furnace oil generation was the highest at ₨45.3 per unit.
Electricity generated from other sources increased 25% month-on-month to 663 GWh and represented 7% of the generation mix.
Source-wise generation cost showed coal contributing ₨4.4 per unit to the total cost, followed by furnace oil at ₨2.5 per unit and gas at ₨1.5 per unit.
Nuclear and RLNG each contributed ₨0.6 per unit to the overall generation cost during the month.
