Punjab agri tax hike challenged in LHC over alleged violation of law and assembly role

A petition has been filed before the Lahore High Court challenging the Punjab government’s decision to increase agricultural income tax rates, alleging that the move bypassed mandatory legislative procedures.

The petition has been submitted by the Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) along with opposition MPA Ijaz Shafi.

It contends that the provincial government issued revised tax notifications without placing the changes before the provincial assembly, as required under law.

According to the plea, the Punjab Agricultural Income Tax Act stipulates that any adjustment in agricultural income tax rates must be presented for approval in the assembly.

The petitioners allege that this statutory requirement was not complied with by the authorities concerned.

They argue that the revised tax measures are unconstitutional and have adversely affected the agricultural sector, particularly farmers’ financial stability and livelihoods.

The petition seeks cancellation of the impugned notifications, declaring them unlawful and without constitutional backing.
