    Govt encouraging foreign investors to invest in Pakistan: Qureshi

    Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the government is encouraging foreign investors to invest in Pakistan.

    Talking to American-Pakistani entrepreneurs in New York, he said Pakistan needs a strong economy for effective foreign policy and the government is focusing on priorities at this front.

    He said there has been a historic increase in foreign remittances this year and the credit goes to Pakistanis living abroad. “Pakistan has received over one billion dollars remittance during six months after launching the Roshan Digital Pakistan initiative.”

    He also said the government has initiated e-visa regime to promote tourism in the country.

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has termed trade and investment an important pillar of the country’s foreign policy.

    Talking to a delegation of business leaders on Monday, the prime minister said that the government is working on a comprehensive plan to encourage the non-taxpayers and informal sectors join the economy. In this regard, he invited the business community to give their input and recommendations.

    “Our focus is now on the economic growth after overcoming the most difficult challenge of stabilizing the economy during the first six months,” he asserted, adding that there is a positive sentiment among the international community towards Pakistan which needs to be capitalised.

    The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry president on the occasion briefed the prime minister about the plans of holding an international investment conference, which would help highlight the country’s economic potential.

    Finance Minister Asad Umar, Planning and Development Minister Khusro Bakhtiar, Power Minister Umar Ayub Khan, Adviser to PM on Commerce Abdul Razaq Dawood, Advisor on Institutional Reforms Dr Ishrat Hussain and Board of Investment Chairman Haroon Sharif were also present on the occasion.

    Economic diplomacy among govt’s top priorities: Qureshi

    ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said that economic diplomacy was one of the top priorities of his government’s foreign policy.

    In a meeting with Investment Board Chairman (IB) Haroon Sharif on Friday, Qureshi claimed that foreign investment tendency in the country was rising rapidly ever since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government came into power.

    “Several companies are successfully operating their businesses in Pakistan owing to the vibrant economic policies of the government,” he said, adding that foreign investors have complete faith in the policies of the incumbent government.

    Haroon Sharif on the occasion said full legal protection was being extended to foreign investments and there was no bar on repatriation of profit.

    China considers Pakistan most important partner in foreign policy: Parliamentary body told

    ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Committee on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was informed here on Monday that China considers Pakistan the most important partner in its foreign policy.

    Briefing the media after the meeting of the committee held here on Tuesday, Committee Chairman Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed quoted Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing as saying that China considers CPEC, one of the most powerful pillars of its grand One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative.

    He said Yao Jing has vast experience in the region as he has served twice in Pakistan besides serving the Chinese embassy in New Delhi and Kabul. The meeting was informed that 2018 will be an important year for CPEC as during the year, a number of projects under it would be completed and the mega-project would enter into its practical phase.

    It was also agreed in the meeting to take media into confidence in a bid to minimise negative news being propagated by the foreign media against CPEC and to ensure transparency in CPEC projects.

    Furthermore, the meeting was also informed that special attention was being given to the establishment of nine Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under CPEC in various parts of the country in which private sector would specifically be taken on board.

    The meeting was also informed that CEPC’s range would be extended to Afghanistan and the Middle East. In addition, the particular focus would also be laid on newly added sectors including agriculture, tourism, culture, and information and technology.

    Meanwhile, senior officials of Ministry of Planning and Development informed the committee that a delegation headed by Secretary Planning Shoaib Siddiqui visited China last week to take forward the decision taken by 7th Joint Coordination Committee on CPEC in November last year in Pakistan.

    The delegation specifically talked about Karachi Circular Railway project and up-gradation of 1870 km long Main Line 1 from Karachi to Torkhum.
