KARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) has announced a 24-hour shutdown of gas supply to all industries, including power generation units and CNG stations across Sindh, citing a severe shortage of gas supplies in its system.
The gas closure, which affects even those stations operating on Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), will commence on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at 08:00 am and will continue until Monday, August 12, 2024, at 08:00 am. The total duration of the shutdown is set for 24 hours.
SSGC attributed the decision to a critical depletion of the line pack, resulting in significantly lower gas pressures within the system. The company emphasized that this temporary closure is necessary to manage the gas load effectively in accordance with the approved Sectoral Priority Order currently in place.
In a stern warning, SSGC stated that any industry found violating this mandated Gas Holiday Period would face strict consequences, including a disconnection of their gas supply for a minimum of seven days.
The shutdown is expected to impact various sectors, particularly those reliant on continuous gas supplies for power generation and industrial production. The ongoing gas shortage has raised concerns among stakeholders about potential disruptions and economic losses, particularly in a province heavily dependent on industrial activities.
SSGC’s decision reflects the growing challenges in managing gas supply amid declining reserves and rising demand. The company urged all affected entities to comply with the shutdown order to avoid further complications and ensure a balanced distribution of the available gas resources.
As the gas shortage crisis persists, the industry and government stakeholders are expected to engage in discussions to find long-term solutions to address the supply-demand imbalance and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
