Meta Platforms on Tuesday launched a separate app for its Meta AI assistant, aiming to boost its usage beyond the company’s core platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
This move positions Meta to compete more directly with AI leaders such as Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google. The standalone app is designed to offer more personalized responses based on user-specific elements, including data from Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Meta’s Meta AI assistant is powered by Llama 4, the company’s latest large language model, which is built to rival AI models from OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek, and Anthropic. Llama 4 is designed to improve reasoning, multilingual capabilities, and overall efficiency.
The new app will also integrate with Meta’s AI glasses and work in conjunction with an existing companion app, the company said.
The launch comes as Meta hosts its first-ever AI developer event, LlamaCon, which focuses on the company’s Llama family of AI models. Meta is also planning to test a paid subscription for the advanced versions of its AI chatbot in the second quarter.
Meta AI, which was launched in September 2023, leverages large language models to perform reasoning tasks. The company will report its first-quarter results on Wednesday after markets close.
