Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has started the process of verifying pensioners’ data following a Supreme Court decision that upheld the company’s financial responsibility for post-retirement benefits of its former employees.
In a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday, PTCL confirmed it is now collecting and verifying data related to pensioners.
Once verified, the information will be shared with the Pakistan Telecommunication Employees Trust (PTET) to calculate the company’s required contribution. The financial impact will be reflected in PTCL’s statements after the completion of this exercise.
“The Supreme Court of Pakistan on July 10, 2025 has disposed of the Company’s review petition concerning the pensionary benefits. The Apex Court verdict that the Government increases are admissible to the extent of civil servants, directed PTCL to acknowledge its continuing financial liability and accordingly reflect on its financial records in accordance with applicable accounting and corporate laws principles,” read the PTCL’s notice sent to the PSX.
“This is a complex and time-consuming exercise,” PTCL stated, adding that the financial impact will be determined upon finalization of all relevant records and data.
PTCL assured its stakeholders that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure transparency and compliance following the apex court’s judgment.
It is pertinent to mention here that a three-member bench of the Supreme Court has issued a detailed decision on more than 250 appeals and petitions. The apex court declared former employees of the PTCL as fully entitled to pension and directed the company to prepare a payment schedule within 90 days.
According to the decision, financial problems do not give excuse to the institution from paying pension, PTCL should prepare a payment schedule to pensioners within 90 days.
