Trump says no broader trade deal is expected with Japan

Trump says U.S. would “live by the letter” on this move and made no indication of further negotiations for a larger agreement

The United States will likely follow its announced tariff policy with Japan, President Donald Trump said Wednesday, adding that no broader trade deal is expected with the country.

On July 7, Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from Japan, effective August 1. He said the U.S. would “live by the letter” on this move and made no indication of further negotiations for a larger agreement.

Trump’s administration has set an August 1 deadline for increasing duties on most U.S. imports. While deals with other countries like Indonesia and India are in progress, Trump said Japan is not among the nations with which a wider trade agreement is being negotiated.

The tariffs are part of a broader U.S. trade strategy aimed at reducing the national trade deficit and encouraging domestic manufacturing.
