PEC, Chinese firms launch training initiative for young Pakistani engineers under CPEC

Five-year programme to train 100 engineers, offer scholarships worth Rs3.5m annually, and promote Chinese language learning

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thar Coal Block-1 Power Generation Company, Sino Sindh Resources, and Shanghai Electric Engineering Consulting Company to strengthen Pakistan’s engineering workforce through training, exchange, and capacity building under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

As part of the Thar Block-1 project, the five-year programme will provide practical training, international exposure, and language learning opportunities for Pakistani engineers. Each year, 20 fresh graduates will undergo a six-week training at Thar, combining classroom instruction with hands-on experience in power plant and mining operations. Over five years, 100 engineers will complete the programme.

In addition, five to ten engineers will be sent annually to China for short-term advanced training in modern energy technologies, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange. The initiative also establishes an annual scholarship fund of Rs3.5 million to support 35 students in energy and mining disciplines, benefitting 175 students over five years. Selected scholars will also have opportunities to pursue higher education in China.

A further component of the programme is Chinese language training for up to 50 participants, aimed at improving communication between Pakistani and Chinese engineers and enhancing collaboration on joint projects. Special focus will be placed on encouraging participation from women and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The MoU was signed on behalf of PEC by Dr. Ashfaq A. Sheikh, Technical Advisor Regulations. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman PEC Engr. Waseem Nazir said the partnership demonstrates PEC’s commitment to equipping young engineers with practical skills, international exposure, and language proficiency. He added that the initiative will open new career pathways for Pakistani engineers while building local capacity to meet the country’s energy and industrial needs.
