The Cybercrime Reporting Centre of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Gujranwala has uncovered a large-scale online fraud involving cryptocurrency and bogus investment schemes, officials confirmed Friday.
The crackdown followed a complaint from a Sangla Hill resident, who reported losing Rs1.28 million after being duped by suspects posing as representatives of a foreign firm.
According to the NCCIA spokesperson, initial findings show that fraudsters had been collecting millions of rupees from unsuspecting citizens through multiple bank accounts and mobile numbers. They allegedly relied on fake WhatsApp numbers, international contacts, and deceptive advertisements to lure victims into investing in non-existent digital ventures.
Authorities have registered FIR No. 170/2025 at the NCCIA police station, Gujranwala, under Sections 13, 14, and 16 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and Sections 419, 420, 468, 471, and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
The spokesperson added that further investigations are underway to identify the culprits and recover the defrauded money.
