Punjab launches sweeping crackdown on price hikes

Over 12,000 shopkeepers fined, 107 arrested in 24-hour operation against profiteering

The Punjab Price Control Department has intensified its campaign against profiteering, conducting 486,455 inspections across the province within a single day and taking stern action against violators.

According to official data, the drive resulted in 12,043 fines, 107 arrests, and seven registered cases for overpricing essential goods.

Wheat flour vendors were the biggest offenders, with 1,074 fined, 18 arrested, and four cases lodged. Inspections at chicken and meat outlets led to 1,911 fines and 16 arrests, while enforcement teams penalised 576 shopkeepers and arrested 13 for overcharging on roti. In the sugar category, 952 fines were imposed and 13 arrests made.

Officials said the province-wide crackdown will continue until prices of key food staples are brought under strict control.
