NEW YORK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session to discuss issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism, emphasizing the UN’s central role in addressing global challenges. He appreciated Guterres’ leadership in promoting international peace, stability, and giving developing countries a stronger voice in global governance.
The Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s recent flood relief and rescue efforts and called for concerted international action, including additional climate finance for vulnerable countries.Â
He also raised matters of national and regional significance, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, and externally sponsored terrorism, urging a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with Security Council resolutions.
Shehbaz Sharif commended the Secretary-General’s efforts in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India and expressed concern over the Gaza conflict, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and a path toward Palestinian statehood.
Guterres lauded Pakistan’s role at the UN, particularly its principled positions on the Security Council. Both leaders agreed on the importance of strengthening the UN’s role in promoting global peace and development.
