Chinese electric motorcycle firm explores investment opportunities in Pakistan’s EV sector

A three-member delegation from the Chinese electric motorcycle company Chaoniu (EV) visited Pakistan’s Board of Investment (BOI) to explore investment and localisation prospects in Pakistan’s emerging electric vehicle (EV) sector. 

The meeting, chaired by Dr Erfa Iqbal, Additional Secretary (EDG-II), included senior BOI officials. The Chinese delegation was led by Lu Zhong. 

Dr. Iqbal highlighted the government’s recent reforms to ease doing business in Pakistan, with specific incentives for foreign investments, especially in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Special Technology Zones. She assured full facilitation for EV and high-tech projects under these zones.

During the meeting, Lu Zhong provided insights into Shenzhen City Worldwide New Energy Technology Company Limited, noting its expertise in electric motor systems and the conversion of conventional motorcycles into electric vehicles. 

The delegation discussed localising EV technologies in Pakistan, focusing on electric motorcycles, motor systems, battery technology, and electronic control units (ECUs).

The delegation also explored the establishment of Research and Development (R&D) facilities, phased manufacturing, and partnerships with Pakistani companies for joint ventures. Electric vehicles are a priority sector in Pakistan–China economic cooperation, with a growing demand for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers.

The BOI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the delegation’s efforts, marking a significant step toward local value addition, technology transfer, and sustainable mobility solutions in Pakistan. This collaboration aligns with Pakistan’s objectives under CPEC Phase-II, strengthening industrial partnerships for long-term economic growth.
