The Punjab government has established an institutional framework for artificial intelligence by setting up a dedicated AI cell comprising data scientists, software developers and technology specialists to support governance reforms.
According to reports, the Punjab Information Technology Board stated that artificial intelligence has been formally incorporated into government policy, with a central AI model approved to guide development across various departments. The initiative includes the appointment of programme managers, technical leads and solution architects to ensure projects are aligned with departmental needs.
Under the new framework, AI-driven initiatives will be implemented under the supervision of data analytics and AI experts, following earlier digital projects that failed to deliver intended outcomes. The government has directed that all AI projects undergo feasibility assessments, prototyping and testing to ensure practical and scalable use.
The AI cell will provide technical support to departments, with a focus on optimising existing infrastructure rather than creating parallel systems. Data engineers and system integration specialists have been assigned to support implementation and interoperability.
A cost-controlled model has also been approved, with software engineers and DevOps experts deployed to limit unnecessary expenditure. PITB’s role has been defined around institutional capacity building, oversight and technical coordination to support the sustainable adoption of artificial intelligence across provincial departments.
