KPT begins channel dredging to handle larger vessels, expand capacity
Project to deepen channel to 14 metres, enable 100,000-ton ships and extend 14 berths to 15.5 metres

Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has started dredging of its main channel under an agreement with KGTL to upgrade port capacity and accommodate larger vessels. The project aims to deepen the upper and lower harbour channels to 14 metres, while extending 14 berths to a depth of 15.5 metres to improve cargo handling.
Officials said the work is expected to be completed within three months and will allow KPT to handle vessels up to 350 metres in length with a gross registered tonnage of 100,000.
The initiative is intended to support higher cargo volumes and improve navigation at the port.
Authorities said the upgrade will help reduce congestion and improve vessel turnaround times, contributing to smoother port operations.
The move is part of efforts to strengthen port infrastructure and support trade flows through the country’s main maritime gateway.
