Pakistan Navy commissions first Hangor-class submarine in China

The Pakistan Navy commissioned its first Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, in a ceremony held in Sanya, China, on Thursday. President Asif Ali Zardari attended the ceremony as the chief guest, while Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf was also present.

The president said the induction marks a milestone in the Navy’s modernisation efforts and reflects Pakistan’s ability to safeguard its sovereignty, maritime interests and economic routes.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf said evolving risks at key maritime chokepoints have increased pressure on global trade and energy supply chains, underscoring the need for advanced naval capabilities.

He said the Hangor-class submarines are equipped with advanced weapons, sensors and Air Independent Propulsion systems, and will support maritime security operations and deterrence.

The submarines are expected to contribute to the protection of Sea Lines of Communication in the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir congratulated the Pakistan Navy on the induction.
