Pakistan issues urgent tender for LNG cargo delivery this week

Pakistan has floated an urgent tender for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo to be delivered this week, as disruption risks in the Strait of Hormuz continue to pressure regional energy supplies.

According to a news report, state-owned Pakistan LNG Limited has invited international suppliers to submit bids for one LNG cargo on a delivered ex-ship basis at Port Qasim, according to a tender document published by the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority.

The tender seeks 140,000 cubic metres of LNG, with a tolerance of plus or minus 10%. The cargo is to be delivered between Tuesday and Saturday.

The move comes amid renewed concerns over vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global LNG shipments and a key passage for Qatari cargoes. Qatar is one of Pakistan’s main long-term LNG suppliers.

Any disruption in the waterway can force importing countries to seek replacement cargoes from the spot market, where supplies are often costlier and harder to arrange at short notice.

Pakistan has already faced pressure on LNG availability due to tensions in the region, prompting the government to seek additional spot cargoes to meet domestic demand, particularly from power producers.

On June 11, Pakistan decided to purchase LNG from the spot market to meet the requirements of power producers. Earlier, the government had secured gas cargoes from Qatar.
