Monnoo Energy seeks licence modification to add 7.4MW solar plant

Monnoo Energy Limited (MEL) has sought approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to amend its generation licence and increase its generation capacity to 12MW by adding a 7.4MW solar photovoltaic plant, Business Recorder reported.

NEPRA has invited comments from stakeholders and the general public on the company’s proposed licence modification.

According to NEPRA, MEL has applied for a Licence Proposed Modification under the NEPRA Licensing Regulations, 2021.

The company plans to install the solar PV plant alongside its existing 4.6MW furnace oil-based thermal generation facility.

MEL’s original generation licence, No. SGC/010/2001, was issued in December 2001 and later modified in November 2017.

NEPRA said the licence will be updated if the proposed changes are approved after due process.

In its application, MEL said the addition of solar power would help optimise its generation operations and support more sustainable energy production.

The company said the modification would also support bulk power consumers, particularly those required to include renewable energy in their electricity consumption portfolios.

After the solar plant is added, MEL expects to retain its furnace oil-based plant mainly for standby use. The company said this would reduce reliance on expensive and less environmentally friendly fuel sources.

MEL also claimed that the proposed modification would reduce electricity tariffs for its consumers without affecting service quality or its obligations under the existing licence.
