Govt asks fertiliser companies to cut urea prices, rules out shortages in coming months 

The federal government has asked fertiliser companies to reduce urea prices as part of efforts to ensure affordable and uninterrupted supplies for farmers ahead of the upcoming crop season.

Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain made the request while chairing a meeting with Punjab Minister for Agriculture Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah to review fertiliser availability, pricing and distribution across the country.

The meeting discussed measures to stabilise prices through coordination among the federal government, provincial governments and fertiliser manufacturers.

Rana Tanveer Hussain said consultations were underway with all provinces and relevant stakeholders to develop a joint strategy for maintaining price stability and improving the supply chain.

He said sufficient urea stocks were available and rejected reports of a fertiliser shortage.

“There is no shortage of fertilizers in Pakistan. Fertilizer manufacturing plants are operating normally, adequate quantities are available in the market, and there is no likelihood of any shortage in the coming months,” he said.

Punjab Minister for Agriculture Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah assured the federal government of the province’s full cooperation in ensuring farmers receive fertiliser on time and at reasonable prices.

He said coordination between the federal and provincial governments would help prevent market distortions, improve distribution and protect farmers’ interests.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain close coordination with provincial governments and fertiliser manufacturers to ensure adequate stocks, stable prices and uninterrupted supplies in support of agricultural production and food security.
