Exports of processed halal meat touch $214.5 million

ISLAMABAD: Exports of processed halal meat to Muslim countries have surged to Rs214.5 million from Rs20 million, the standing committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) was informed on Tuesday.

Director Animal Quarantine Department (AND) apprised the meeting chaired by Abdul Qadar Khan Wadan, that Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) had banned the commercial export of live animals on a summary moved by Ministry of National Food Security and Research in 2013, reported an English daily.

AQD apprised the meeting exports of processed halal meat to Islamic countries had risen to $214.5 million during 2012-13 against a meagre $20 million for live animal’s export.

IPC was provided a briefing on Livestock and Dairy Development, AQD in respect to exports of animals to Afghanistan and Iran via Balochistan. During the meeting the setting up of an independent and permanent secretariat of Council of Common Interests (CCI) in respect to provincial participation, working and performance of IPC was also discussed.
