Apple has told Britain’s competition regulator that some proposed remedies for concerns in the mobile browser market could reduce its incentive to innovate.
The company responded to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation into mobile browser and browser engine supply, as well as cloud gaming distribution through app stores in the UK.
Apple’s response, published on the government website Wednesday, addressed concerns over mandated feature access. The company stated that it would “not be appropriate” to require free access to future WebKit or iOS features used by Safari, citing the time and resources involved in their development.
Apple argued that such a mandate would “have a chilling impact” on its incentives to innovate and could lead to “free-riding and underinvestment on the part of third parties.” The CMA is assessing potential remedies to address competition concerns in the mobile browser market.
