Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted prolonged tax disputes stuck in courts, urging the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi to ensure their timely resolution, The News reported.
The CJP, in turn, asked the prime minister for suggestions to improve the justice system. He also welcomed the prime minister’s discussion on improving the justice system.
In his maiden meeting with the CJP on Wednesday, PM Sharif congratulated Justice Afridi on assuming his responsibilities and expressed good wishes. “The prime minister also discussed with the chief justice, the country’s economic situation as well as economic and security challenges,” the PM House’s media wing in a statement said.
The chief justice also shared with the prime minister the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee and sought the input of the government. The move is part of the CJP’s overall reform agenda intending reduction in the pendency and providing speedy justice to the people of Pakistan.
He emphasized the need for bipartisan support for sustainable reforms, noting that the opposition would also be consulted. The prime minister welcomed the reform proposals and assured government cooperation, particularly in addressing cases of missing persons.
The CJP has also extended a similar invitation to Leader of the Opposition Omer Ayub to seek input on judicial reforms. The meeting came just days after an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation met the CJP, seeking the judiciary’s support in maintaining financial discipline.
