Trump to unveil 2026 budget proposal on Friday

The document is expected to reflect sweeping cuts in federal spending and aggressive fiscal priorities

President Donald Trump is set to unveil his administration’s budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year on Friday, according to a White House official.

The document is expected to reflect sweeping cuts in federal spending and aggressive fiscal priorities. The budget will be submitted to Congress for review, where it is likely to face significant revisions.

The White House proposal, a key annual document outlining the administration’s economic assumptions and spending plans, arrives as Congressional Republicans work to resolve internal disagreements over how to fund a major tax-cut package targeted for passage by July 4. The proposal is expected to recommend sharp reductions in funding for environmental protection, renewable energy, education, and foreign aid. Cuts reportedly exceed $160 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Despite the White House plan, it is Congress that holds the power to finalize government spending. Historically, lawmakers make substantial changes to the president’s request before passing appropriations bills.

As part of his push to reshape the federal budget, Trump has signaled plans for a military spending package exceeding $1 trillion. He argues that revenue from broad-based tariffs, which have disrupted global trade patterns, will help offset lost income from tax reductions. “It’s a big, beautiful bill,” Trump said earlier this week in reference to the tax plan.

Trump’s 2026 budget also reflects his long-standing commitment to downsizing the federal government. Since taking office for a second term, his administration with backing from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has shut down multiple federal agencies and eliminated tens of thousands of government jobs. Some of these actions remain under legal scrutiny.

The president will not be in Washington for the release of the budget. Instead, he concluded a week-long celebration marking his first 100 days in office with a commencement address at the University of Alabama on Thursday before departing for a weekend in West Palm Beach.
