Disney to pay additional $438.7 million to NBCUniversal for Hulu

Disney’s CEO says Hulu purchase enables full ownership, integrating with Disney+ and ESPN’s direct-to-consumer servic

Disney has completed its acquisition of Hulu, agreeing to pay NBCUniversal $438.7 million for its 33% stake in the streaming service.

Hulu had 54.7 million subscribers by the end of Disney’s second quarter, with titles like The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. In 2019, Comcast agreed to sell its Hulu stake to Disney after Disney gained a majority share through its $71 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets.

The 2019 deal set a $27.5 billion minimum valuation for Hulu, with a third-party appraisal determining the final value.

Disney’s CEO Bob Iger said the purchase allows full ownership of Hulu, enabling closer integration with Disney+ and ESPN’s upcoming direct-to-consumer service. Comcast stated that Hulu generated nearly $10 billion in proceeds for them and built an audience for NBCUniversal’s content.
