No deal likely with Japan, Trump says ahead of July 9 trade deadline

Trump also raises the possibility of setting a higher tariff on imports from Japan

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is not considering an extension of the July 9 deadline for countries to reach trade agreements with the United States.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One while returning to Washington from Florida, Trump said he is doubtful a deal will be reached with Japan. “We’ve dealt with Japan. I’m not sure we’re going to make a deal. I doubt it,” he said.

Trump also raised the possibility of setting a higher tariff on imports from Japan. He suggested a rate of “30% or 35% or whatever the number is that we determine,” which would be well above the 24% tariff he announced on April 2 before pausing its implementation.
