Starting September 1, residents and shopkeepers in upscale localities across Punjab will begin receiving cleanliness utility bills, marking the first phase of the government’s initiative to establish ‘zero-waste’ areas with penalties for littering.
Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) CEO Babir Sahib Din confirmed that residents and commercial property owners in prominent Lahore areas, including Gulberg, Johar Town, Muslim Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, and others, will be subject to these charges. Private housing schemes, with their own disposal systems, are exempt.
The cleanliness fee, approved by the Punjab cabinet following the launch of the Suthra Punjab Programme, will start at Rs300 per month for a five-marla house and can go up to Rs3,000 for business premises, depending on the type and size.Â
Defaulters will face penalties, including service cancellations, fines, and even FIRs for illegal waste disposal.
Additional plans for other districts, including Multan and Faisalabad, are set to roll out soon, with enforcement officers tasked with monitoring compliance in these ‘zero-waste’ areas. The aim is not only to improve waste management but to instill a sense of public responsibility.
