Federal government commits to flood relief and recovery efforts

Climate and agricultural emergencies declared to support affected populations

Finance Minister and Senator Mohammad Aurangzeb on Sunday said the federal government is committed to rehabilitating flood-affected people, following the Prime Minister’s declaration of climate and agricultural emergencies. The minister visited flood-hit areas in Toba Tek Singh district, including Mal Fatyana Bridge, to review ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Aurangzeb said more than 116,000 of the 117,000 affected individuals have been evacuated through coordinated rescue efforts. He emphasized that strict measures are being implemented to prevent hoarding and artificial inflation, while broader issues such as climate change, unregulated urban expansion, and unsustainable agricultural practices are being addressed.

The finance minister added that local, provincial, and federal authorities, alongside the State Bank of Pakistan and other financial institutions, are assessing damages and aim to complete a comprehensive evaluation within 10 to 15 days. He also affirmed that a recovery strategy and the 300-day climate action plan, led by the Ministry of Climate Change in coordination with provincial governments, will be implemented to provide maximum relief.

Aurangzeb highlighted the need to learn from past mistakes in zoning and land use that worsen flood impacts, while reaffirming the government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate devastation and support affected communities.
